Full guide in progress. This stub covers the practical essentials. The complete article will include a hour-by-hour DIY itinerary, the 4 best gardens ranked, where to eat zongzi, and the Tongli/Wuzhen comparison.

The 30-second version

Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is a 1,700-year-old canal town, 50 km west of Shanghai. Wooden boats, stone bridges, narrow lanes, zongzi (sticky rice in lotus leaves). The closest "Venice of the East" experience to Shanghai. Doable as a half-day or full-day trip.

How to get there

DIY vs Tour

DIY (Metro + walking): cheaper (~$15 total including entry), more flexible, no English narration. Recommended for confident travelers.

Klook tour: ~$28, English guide, includes a wooden boat ride, scheduled return time. Recommended for first-timers in China.
